Researchers in the Department of Physical Therapy  use neurophysiological methods to examine the mechanisms underlying neurological rehabilitation.

Techniques include 1) measurement of electromyogram (EMG) activity to evaluate patterns of muscle activation following stroke or spinal cord injury in humans; 2) EMG measures of diaphragm activity during respiratory rehabilitation in humans; 3) measurement of respiratory neuron and nerve discharge in animal models of spinal cord injury, and 4) multi-unit recording techniques to study spinal cord neural networks.
