Andrea L. Behrman, PT, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in Physical Therapy
at the University of Florida and Interim Director of the Brooks Center for
Rehabilitation Studies. She is also Coordinator of the Lower Extremity Research
Initiative at the VA Brain Rehabilitation Research Center. Dr. Behrman’s
specialty as a physical therapist and researcher is in neurorehabilitation.
Her overall research objective is to develop and test physical rehabilitation
strategies based on neuroplasticity and biological principles of motor control
to improve outcome in persons with movement disorders secondary to neurologic
disease or injury. Towards this aim, she has been an investigator in several
interdisciplinary studies with neuroscientists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons
examining changes in motor control applying physiological and behavioral
interventions to enhance neuroplasticity. Her current research emphasis
focuses on locomotor training and activity-dependent plasticity after spinal
cord injury and stroke. Her research is funded by grants from the National
Institutes of Health (NINDS, NCMRR), VA Department of Rehabilitation Research
and Development, and the Craig H. Neilsen Foundation. Dr. Behrman is Co-Director
of the NMPT program and co-teaches the NMPT course, “Neuroplasticity:
A foundation for Neurorehabilitation”.
