Steven George is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy
at the University of Florida, with an affiliate appointment in the Department
of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. He is also a member of the Graduate
Faculty in the Rehabilitation Science Doctoral Program. Dr. George is actively
involved with the Center for Pain Research
and Behavioral Health and the Brooks
Center for Rehabilitation Studies. Dr. George’s primary research
interests involve the utilization of biopsychosocial models for the prevention
and treatment of chronic musculoskeletal pain. Dr. George’s research
projects have been supported by awards from the University of Florida, the
National Institutes of Health, the Department of Defense, and the Foundation
for Physical Therapy. His current research projects include: 1) Developing
and testing behavioral interventions for patients with low back pain; 2)
Investigating the interaction between pain related genetic and psychological
factors in the development of post-operative chronic shoulder pain; 3) Investigating
the mechanisms and efficacy of neural mobilization techniques for reduction
of chronic pain in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome; 4) Investigating
the immediate effect of manual therapy on central sensitization of pain;
and 5) Developing and testing low back pain prevention programs for Soldiers
in the United States Army; see POLM Trial.
Dr. George’s teaching responsibilities include Evidence Based Practice
I - III. He is a guest lecturer in Orthopedic Physical Therapy and assists
with teaching the unit on evaluation and treatment of the lumbar spine.
