Dr. Akima is a visiting professor in the Department of Physical Therapy.
He is currently on sabbatical from Nagoya University and is collaborating
with Dr. Krista Vandenborne in 2009 and 2010. Dr. Akima's research background
is in exercise physiology and his primary project at the University of Florida
is to investigate intramuscular fat distribution in the lower limb in Duchenne
muscular dystrophy patients using magnetic resonance imaging. His specific
research interests are to: 1) investigate neuromuscular adaptations by disuse,
2) establish exercise countermeasure for spaceflight, 3) develop neuromuscular
activation in the vastus intermedius using surface EMG technique, and 4)
establish intramuscular fat/connective tissue distribution in aging muscles.
